Commercial Colour Bumper Plates are solid rubber weight plates built to be dropped. The 50mm Olympic hole fits any standard Olympic barbell, the colour-coding lets you read the load across the room, and the rubber build means you can bail a lift to the floor without damaging the plates, the bar or the slab.

They suit functional training gyms, CrossFit boxes, garage gyms and anyone doing Olympic lifts or deadlifts. They are sold individually, so you can use them for plates to overheads or build the exact load you need and add to the set over time.

Pair them with an Olympic barbell range rated for the lifts you do to complete the setup.

Why it works

Not all bumper plates are equal, and the cheapest ones cost you later. At the bottom of the market sit plates made from recycled tyre crumb rubber: they smell, they chip, and they go out of shape after a season of drops. At the top sit competition plates built to a tight diameter and weight tolerance, priced for serious lifters. These commercial colour plates sit in between, made from solid rubber for durability and a long wear life without the competition price tag. For most gyms, that is the right call: plates you can drop daily that hold their shape, without paying for a tolerance you only need on a competition platform.

Looking after them is light work. Drop a loaded bar flat rather than letting it bounce on one edge, which is what eventually cracks lower-quality plates, and load heavier plates closest to the collar so a thin light plate is not taking the full drop. Store them out of direct sun and off a wet floor, wipe chalk and dust off now and then, and a solid rubber bumper plate will outlast most of the rest of your gym.

Where to use it

  • CrossFit boxes and functional training gyms
  • Garage and home gyms
  • Olympic lifting and deadlift training
  • Commercial gym floors with drop zones or platforms
  • Any setup where you may need to bail a lift safely

FAQs

What is the difference between bumper plates and iron plates?

Bumper plates are made from solid rubber and are designed to be dropped from height without damaging the plate, the bar or the floor. Cast iron plates are not: dropping them can crack the plate and chip the floor. If you do Olympic lifts or train where you may need to bail a rep, bumper plates are the safe choice.

Will these fit my barbell?

Yes, if you have a standard Olympic barbell. These plates have a 50mm Olympic hole, which matches the sleeve diameter on Olympic bars. They will not fit a standard 25mm bar. If you are unsure, measure your bar's sleeve or check whether it is described as Olympic.

Are bumper plates sold individually or in pairs?

These are sold individually. Buying individually means you only pay for the weights you actually use. You can start with one, a pair or add more as your lifts get heavier, building the setup over time.

Can I drop these plates?

Yes. Solid rubber bumper plates are built for exactly that, which is the reason to choose them over iron. Drop the bar flat so the plates land evenly rather than bouncing on one edge, and they will take repeated drops without going out of shape.

What weights can I buy?

The colour range offers weights from 5kg to 25kg. Each weight is a different colour, so you can identify the load on a bar quickly, which is handy in a class setting or a shared gym.

What is the warranty?

The 5kg plates carry a 90-day warranty, and the 10kg to 25kg plates carry a 12-month warranty. The lighter plates have a shorter term because thinner bumpers can flex if heavy weight is dropped on a single light plate, so load heavier plates closest to the collar.
